Officials reported that a tiger attacked and killed an eight-year-old boy on Tuesday within a forested area in Thane, western India.

According to local police, the incident occurred around 8:00 AM. The victim, Krishna Bhaga Ajwale, had headed to a wooded area near his home to gather wild fruit, as reported by the Press Trust of India.

A local police official stated: ‘The boy was picking mangoes when a tiger, concealed in the thicket, ambushed him, pouncing and dragging him into the dense undergrowth.’

The official confirmed that the child died instantly, though it was not specified whether his remains had been recovered.

Statistics from 2023 indicate that the number of wild tigers in India—the world’s largest habitat for the species—has surpassed the 3,000 mark. Consequently, India is now home to approximately 75% of the global tiger population.”
