“The climate is getting hotter…” 2024 will become the hottest year
The Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union reported today, Thursday, that 2024 will surpass 2023 to become the hottest year on record.
The Copernicus service reported that average temperatures have been extremely high from January to October of last year, confirming that 2024 will be the hottest year unless global temperatures drop to nearly zero for the remainder of the year.
The climate is getting hotter
This comes ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference COP29 scheduled to be held next week in Azerbaijan, where countries will attempt to agree on increasing funding to combat climate change.
Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election has undermined expectations about what the talks will yield.
Service director Carlo Pontimpo told Reuters: “The climate is getting hotter on all continents and oceans.” So, it is certain that we will witness record-breaking performances.
Carbon dioxide emissions resulting from the burning of coal, oil, and gas represent the main cause of global warming.
Countries agreed in the Paris Agreement in 2015 to try to prevent the Earth’s temperature from rising more than 1.5 degrees Celsius to avoid the worst consequences of global warming.
The world has not exceeded this target, but the Copernicus service now expects the world to surpass the Paris Agreement target around 2030.
Permanent effects
Last month, a comprehensive study published in the journal “Nature” revealed that any warming, even if temporary, exceeding the threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius will cause “permanent effects” on the future of humanity.
This warning came as a result of three years of research conducted by 30 scientists from various nationalities.
These scientists confirm that exceeding the 1.5-degree threshold, as set by the Paris Agreement, could lead to permanent consequences over thousands of years.
