A rare scene of an octopus attacking a camera in the depths of the sea… Video

Researchers from the Minderoo Foundation and the Centre for Deep Sea Research at the University of Western Australia (UWA) captured rare footage of the “octopus squid” in the depths of the ocean as it attacked the underwater camera.

These photos were taken at a depth of about 1000 meters beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean, using a camera with a bait that drops freely into the sea near the Samoa Passage.

The animal in the video is the Dana’s octopus squid (Taningia danae), which is a member of the family (Octopoteuthidae) that feeds on surface fish, crustaceans, and other types of squid.
The types of squid within the family (Octopoteuthidae) have eight arms, which is why they are referred to as “octopus squid.”

In the footage, the squid suddenly emerges from the darkness and rushes towards the camera, lunging at it with its arms before quickly fleeing, just moments before grabbing the camera.

According to this study, the researchers state: “These light-emitting organs of this type of squid, which emit flashes of light, are the result of a chemical reaction, and they are the largest of their kind in the animal kingdom.”

But scientists rarely observe these flashes from the squid in the deep sea, which is why these shots are so significant.
