Nigeria.. Floods are sweeping predators into the streets.
Local officials and the zoo director stated that a dam collapsed on Tuesday in northeastern Nigeria, resulting in severe flooding that prompted evacuations and swept deadly reptiles from the zoo into towns in the area.
The collapse of the Alaw Dam in Borno State caused the worst flooding in the state since the same dam collapsed 30 years ago, forcing many residents to flee their homes.
According to the state government, the dam was operating at full capacity due to unusually heavy rainfall.
The spokesperson for the state police, Nahum Dasu, stated that about 15 percent of the capital of Borno State, Maiduguri, was submerged in water. The death toll from the floods has not been announced yet.
For his part, the general manager of the Borno State Museum Park, Ali Abatcha Don Best, stated that the floods killed about 80 percent of the animals, while an unspecified number of reptiles escaped.
The zoo director said, “The waters swept some dangerous animals into our towns, such as crocodiles and snakes.”
The Borno Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Osman Tar, confirmed that local authorities issued a flood warning and an immediate evacuation order for residents near the riverbanks. He added that all schools in the state will be closed for the next two weeks.
